Accelerating Clean Technology Access for Emerging Market Consumers

Presentation

Panel Discussion

Emerging markets (EMs) are home to 80% of the world's population, with Southeast Asia, India and Africa together consuming one-quarter of global energy. With changes in lifestyle brought about by growing affluence projected in these EMs – cars, air-conditioning, larger homes, and higher protein diets, their share of global emissions may rise to 73% by 2050. Thus, achieving our collective climate goals requires supporting a technological leapfrog and rapid adoption of renewable energy production and consumption in EMs.

More than Carbon: How the Implementation of High-integrity Article 6 Projects Could Benefit People and Planet

Panel discussion

The rise of carbon markets has led to the development of carbon-abatement projects that, if done well, could have positive benefits on the global climate. But such projects should be viewed from more than just from the carbon lens. Whether it be the protection or restoration of nature, or the provision of cookstoves to rural communities, carbon projects could provide many other positive benefits for local communities and biodiversity. This panel hopes to expound on the non-carbon benefits of Article 6 implementation projects, using examples from real-world projects across the tropics, from Southeast Asia to Africa and Latin America. Panellists will also consider the pitfalls of taking a narrow focus on carbon as the basis for the establishment of nature conservation projects. Overall, the panel aims to generate discussion on ways to connect the global benefits of climate mitigation with co-benefits, which tend to be more localised.

Enabling Private Investment for Nature-based Solutions – From Ideas to Action

Panel discussion

Nature-based solutions (NBS) involve the protection and sustainable management of terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems, offering cost-effective climate action by addressing the twin crises of nature loss and climate change simultaneously. However, NBS currently receives less than 3% of total climate finance, reflecting critical underfunding in this area. What are the levers to unlock private investments into NBS, and what are the types of capital needed? How can policymakers, investors, academia and project developers work in unison to create an enabling environment to de-risk NBS projects and catalyse funding to scale impact?

This panel hopes to expound on the non-carbon benefits of Article 6 implementation projects, using examples from real-world projects across the tropics, from Southeast Asia to Africa and Latin America. Panellists will also consider the pitfalls of taking a narrow focus on carbon as the basis for the establishment of nature conservation projects. Overall, the panel aims to generate discussion on ways to connect the global benefits of climate mitigation with co-benefits, which tend to be more localised.

Click to watch session

Panel discussion Nature-based solutions (NBS) involve the protection and sustainable management of terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems, offering cost-effective climate action by addressing the twin crises of nature loss and climate change simultaneously.

Carbon Capture and Sequestration – Promise, Prospects and Challenges

Panel discussion

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in its Special Report on Global Warming at 1.5℃, shows that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) of 100-1000 GtCO2 will be required over the 21st Century, but notes that this accelerated level of removal is unprecedented and unproven, and that further work needs to be done on its feasibility and sustainability. It is estimated that up to 90% of carbon emissions from the industrial use of fossil fuels could be removed by CCS. This potential is concentrated in the Asia–Pacific region that has 1,300 emitter companies and more than 20 potential hubs. The momentum in CCUS deployment has grown substantially in recent years, with over 500 projects in various stages of development across the CCUS value chain and announcements of around 50 new capture facilities to be operating by 2030, capturing around 125 Mt CO2 per year.

While there is growing interest to develop off-shore CCS in sub-seabed geological formations, there are unresolved questions about the legal and regulatory, technological and logistics considerations that impact on its deployment at scale and the risks of adverse effects on the marine environment. The panel will examine the legal and policy context in which CCS is being advocated and examine the existing international and domestic legal regulatory frameworks (including gaps) that govern such activities as well as the policy, economic and technical drivers that incentivize CCS infrastructure and activities. The panel will also discuss questions relating to the carbon accounting infrastructure and methodologies for CO2 capture and storage and CO2 transport and a case study of innovative CCS technologies will be presented.

Click to watch session

Panel discussion Southeast Asia is one of the world’s largest marine biodiversity hotspots, where millions in the region rely on the ocean for food, livelihoods and protection from natural disasters. Yet, interest in the region’s marine environment – and its contribution to the well-being of its inhabitants – is only just starting to develop. This panel will explore why governments, companies, research institutions and philanthropies in the region need to take a bigger interest in Southeast Asia’s marine environment, in terms of (a) promoting scientific research in marine biology and oceanography (b) developing a holistic ocean governance approach, and (c) providing funding to derisk ocean-based enterprises that could benefit rural livelihoods.

Climate-resilient Future: Transforming Water Challenges into Opportunities

Panel discussion

As global water demand continues to accelerate due to population growth, rapid urbanisation, and climate change, water technology will be key to address growing concerns about a future where access to clean water will be increasingly challenging. While the technology for improving water security is available, enabling environments need to be put in place to make water more affordable and accessible. We also need to strengthen capacity building and expertise to effectively implement such technology in developing countries. Collaboration among governments, international organisations, the private sector, and other stakeholders is therefore crucial.

In this session, leaders will share insights on how governments and organisations can capitalise on the sustainability challenges and transform them into opportunities. They will also exchange views on how the international community can work together to create a shared future that is prosperous for all.

Decarbonizing Rice Cultivation - An Overview

Presentation

Methane has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years it reaches the atmosphere and is a critical driver of global temperature rise. Yet, agriculture is the largest source of anthropogenic methane emissions and has contributed to an overall increase in methane in earth’s atmosphere since 2017. Rice, which is a staple in Asian diets, makes up 12% of global methane emissions and is the largest source of methane emissions in Southeast Asia. How can innovation and sound economics reshape smallholder rice farmers’ behaviour to contribute to a lower-carbon, nature-positive food ecosystem?

Innovating Towards a Sustainable and Resilient Agri-Food System

Panel discussion

Agriculture today has a large impact on the atmosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere – from accounting for approximately 70% of global freshwater withdrawal, to the use of synthetic fertilisers that are responsible for 2.1% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Left unabated, unsustainable agricultural practices will threaten crop yield and global food supply resilience. How can we use science and technology to redesign agriculture to be more sustainable and nature-positive?

Hear from our panelists from the agri-food sector on how they are redefining their respective core businesses to mitigate carbon emissions and protect nature, while remaining economically viable for farming communities.
