Adapting to Sea Level Rise and Enhancing Flood Resilience

30% of Singapore’s land is less than 5m above mean sea level. We are vulnerable to flooding from both the sea (due to sea level rise, high tides and storm surges) and more extreme and unpredictable rainfall arising from climate change.

Singapore adopt a multi-pronged approach to enhance our flood resilience by upgrading our drainage system, strengthening shared responsibility with building owners and developers, as well as building community resilience to better prepare for and respond to flood incidents. We have also progressively commenced site-specific studies at various sections of the coastline to develop tailored coastal protection measures that form a continuous line of defence.

We also incorporate multi-functionality by transforming concrete canals into natural rivers, and integrating green and blue spaces with recreational spaces, waterfront living concepts and nature. This enhances flood protection while supporting biodiversity and bringing people closer to our waters.
