Feeding Our Future

Singapore imports more than 90 percent of our food. This means that we are vulnerable to external shocks and supply disruptions that can arise from time to time. This could be due to various factors, including climate change.

To safeguard Singapore’s food security, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) adopts a multi-pronged strategy comprising import source diversification, local production, and stockpiling. SFA also maintains a science-based food regulatory system that is consistent with international standards and continuously stays abreast of the latest scientific developments to enable food innovation while ensuring food safety.

Local production serves as an assured and regenerative source during overseas food supply disruptions. SFA works closely with the industry to transform our local agri-food sector into one that is productive, climate-resilient, and resource-efficient. For instance, we support local farms to tap on technology through the Agri-food Cluster Transformation Fund, and foster research partnerships through the Singapore Food Story R&D Programme to bridge technological gaps. Local produce is fresher, lasts longer, incurs fewer transport miles to reach us and many are pesticide-free.
