Tackling Urban Heat

Singapore has adopted a science-based and proactive approach to tackle heat:

  1. Implement national-level cooling strategies
We employ a suite of cooling strategies, such as facilitating wind flow and shade through urban and building design guidelines and using greenery and cool materials to reduce heat absorption. We also reduce heat generated from human activities by electrifying vehicles and improving energy efficiency of buildings.
  2. Strengthen community’s resilience to heat
To empower the community to cope with a warming world, we developed sector-specific guidelines on managing heat stress, such as those for outdoor workplaces and schools. We also launched a Heat Stress Advisory and publicly share heat stress sensor data through an app to help the general population minimise the risk of heat stress.
  3. Deepen scientific understanding of heat
To ensure our strategies are effective and evidence-based, we develop climate projections, monitor heat through a network of sensors, study factors contributing to urban heat and the effects of heat on health and productivity, and conduct research and development on effective cooling technologies.
